How to create an XLIFF file from Excel

By using the Okapi filters, you can create XLIFF files to localize your source language documents into a target language. These instructions show how to convert an Excel file that contains source and target language entries to an XLIFF file. You can also use these instructions and the Table Filter to convert other "delimited" files, like CSV files, to the XLIFF format.

Setting Things Up

1. Make sure the Excel file contains the data you want to use.

2. Save the Excel file as a tab-delimited text file.

3. Drop the file into Rainbow in Input List 1. By default, the plain text filter is assigned to the file.

Configuring the Table Filter

1. In the Filter Configuration column, double click the filter name. The Input Document Properties dialog appears.

2. Select the Table Filter from the drop-down list.

3. Click Create to create a new configuration for extracting the terms. The Table Filter Parameters dialog opens.

4. In the Table Type section select "TSV" (you are working with a tab delimited file after all).

5. In the Table Properties section, set the line value to the line in the Excel file where your data begins. If you have one header row, this will be line two. In this example, headers are not exported.

5. Go to the Columns tab and select "Extract by column definitions"

6. Click Add to add the two columns. To define source and target language columns, select "source" and "target" when adding.

7. Click OK and go back to the Rainbow main window.

Generating the XLIFF file

7. To generate an XLIFF file, run the Create Translation Package utility.

At this point you should be able to use any utility to do whatever you need with the source and target content.
